TO RUN OR NOT…?
Question that gets asks ALOT in the fitness world, what type of exercise is best to make yourself look good?
Though this might be a vain question, the truth is almost all of us have thought how we could look better!
For some reason ‘running’ has be give a gold star approval by the general population… but is it really?
Personally I love to hate running. I hate doing it because when I do, I push myself to the max each run! High intense, short distances!
Long endurance runners seem to plateau and few get results. Sure set a goal ( run half marathon or full marathon) but what is your end goal??? Be healthy, lean, toned, injury free and with plenty of time for other leisure activities.
For many years I have experienced people bragging that they have accomplished a massive run/jog but yet not being able to shift the extra kilos they wanted to look good…??? Wasted endless hours, pounded the joints causing injury. Hmm, sound familiar?
Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying stop running. It does work! But how you perform your TRAINING is the key!
1) Periodise your training over a couple months- each week distance/time increases
2) you don’t need to do long distances- short but intense intervals
3) do weight training every other day. More lean muscle = more power and strength to climb the hills
4) rest! Smashing your legs day in and day out will not make any benefit for muscle fibre recovery, and will increase your cortisol levels to signal your body to stop burning fat:-(
5) nutrition- particular long distance runs will burn lot calories but it’s the type of calories you replace will show your results ( don’t run 20km and then think you deserve a whole cake…) increase your protein!
6) ask yourself on that long run, what else could you be doing than using all that time on a run, when you could do short sharp burst style training and look even better!?!
FYI I love the outdoors but I just prefer my leisure time with family and friends….
